How to Identify Business Tasks Worth Automating
A frustrating task is not automatically a good automation candidate. The strongest opportunities combine repetition, understandable inputs, a stable desired result, and a manageable cost when something goes wrong.
Look for a stable pattern
Document the trigger, inputs, steps, decisions, output, frequency, and exceptions. If knowledgeable employees describe entirely different processes, the first improvement may be clarifying the workflow rather than automating it.
Score value and risk together
Estimate time and delay, but also consider customer impact, sensitive information, compliance, reversibility, and the ease of human review. A high-volume low-risk drafting task may be a better pilot than an occasional high-consequence decision.
Define the evidence of success
Choose a baseline and a modest observable outcome: fewer handoffs, quicker preparation, fewer missing fields, or more consistent review. Test with real variations and include the cost of monitoring and maintenance in the decision.
